Brilliant Web Aplications

Andrew Minett - Director, Internet Vision Technologies We’re surprised how many Australian businesses don’t realise the Internet can improve their relationships with other businesses and give them a competitive edge. In this issue, we introduce you to ideas for interacting with other businesses through your websites.

We also explore different ways your organisation can receive payments, and offer advice on when and how to move to automated payment systems.

With so many of you talking to Margaritta, we help you get to know her better.

Linking your website to your internal ERP system

Enterprise eCommerce by IVT logo5 key reasons many companies don’t link their Enterprise Resource Planning System to their website are:

  1. They can’t see a business benefit.
  2. They don’t want to destroy their dealer, partner or reseller relationships.
  3. They think freight tracking is too complex.
  4. The default web content management system that’s linked to the ERP system is an afterthought.
  5. It sounds too hard.

Our clients that have linked to their ERP system see things differently:

  1. They’ve improved efficiency, opened new growth opportunities and gained a competitive edge.
  2. They’ve further entrenched ties with their dealers, partners and resellers.
  3. They know complex freight rules can be figured out.
  4. They’ve used IVT’s purpose made, proven web content management system to link to their ERP.
  5. They’ve found a reliable solution ultimately makes things easier.

IVT’s Enterprise eCommerce provides a reliable web content management system proven over 10 years. It provides two-way links into internal Enterprise Resource Management Systems such as Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Navision). This allows you to:

  • Easily update feature rich web content.
  • Manage online product sales for your dealers, partners or resellers so you can improve this relationship.
  • Sell products directly to end users if desired.
  • Apply different discount structures based on client and product information.
  • Calculate accurate freight charges online, including catering for origin and destination regions, cubic weight, surcharges, mark-ups and minimum values.
  • Allow clients direct access to order status and account information.
  • Supply quick entry orders and default standing orders for knowledgeable sales staff and clients.
  • Provide browser access to portable devices, allowing opportunities for on-the-road sales staff and on-the-floor factory staff to increase productivity and reduce delivery times.

When should you move to automated transactions?

As a general rule of thumb, once you’re regularly exceeding more than 10 transactions a week you should consider moving to an automated payment system. Before that, the cost and time benefits probably aren’t there for your business.

If you’re just starting out with automated transactions, we’d usually recommend moving to a credit card gateway rather than using PayPal, as transaction costs are usually lower. Some businesses choose to provide both options. In our experience, where both options are provided about 85% of transactions are credit card payments.

So how do you get started with a credit card gateway on your website?

  1. Setup an eMerchant account with your bank.
    • If you already accept credit card payments, you may have this already.
    • Occasionally your business model may prevent you from getting an eMerchant account.
  2. Select a payment gateway provider.
    • Your bank may provide this facility directly.
    • There are also independent payment gateway providers.
  3. Arrange with us to link payments on your website to your payment gateway.

   Getting to know Margaritta

MargarittaMost of our clients have spoken to Margaritta on the phone. We thought you might like to learn more about her, so here's our interview with Margaritta.

What does a typical day involve for you?
I work on IVT’s helpdesk. I spend most of my time helping clients out either on the phone or through email. Most of our clients have me on speed dial!

I provide advice and tips on using our systems and on entering content. I also spend quite a lot of time investigating issues raised by clients and identifying possible solutions.

What other responsibilities do you have?
When a site is initially being deployed, I help load the contact and member database information. In addition to this, I also help train clients on how to use IVT’s web applications. Usually this is at our offices, but sometimes it requires me travelling interstate.

I also keep our Online Help up to date.

How long have you been at IVT for?
A little over 2 years.

What do you like about working at IVT?
There’s a really good office culture, and the bosses treat us well. There’s a diverse mix of people that are all really friendly. There’s a great team spirit, with everyone willing to help and offer suggestions.

What were you doing before starting with IVT?
I was working in a similar role for an I.T. company in Melbourne that created software products tailored to the needs of Australia’s healthcare industry.

What do you like to do to relax?
Cook! I love experimenting and trying out new things in the kitchen.

Strange as it sounds but I do find fishing really calming because you never know what to expect.

And of course, I love music and …shopping. A bit of retail therapy never hurts!
